Kevin Augustine's Lone Wolf Tribe

Kevin Augustine
Artistic Director

Kevin Augustine is artistic director of Lone Wolf Tribe, a puppet theatre ensemble creating original work for adults since 1997. Acting in the plays he writes while animating the puppets he makes, Kevin transforms ordinary foam—hand carved for maximum expressiveness—into living, breathing creatures: strangely unsettling while at the same time extremely tender. He and his puppet tribe have performed at theatres and festivals in the U.S. and internationally, including The HARARE International Festival of the Arts in Zimbabwe, Africa; NYC’s “Trio” sponsored by The Henson International Festival of Puppet Theatre, Dance Theatre Workshop and the Painted Bride in Philadelphia.

This uniquely bizarre partnership between Kevin and his puppets boldly explores the edges of theatrical style and human experience. Together they bring to life sublimely inventive productions that are at once, emotional, visual, brutal, and poetic.

Kevin and his company have been funded by various organizations including NYSCA, The Jim Henson Foundation, The Greenwall Foundation, The Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, The Puffin Foundation, Puppeteers of America and The Axe Hougton Foundation.

Kevin’s most recent work, ANIMAL, about shamanism and vivisection -- hailed "Masterful and pulsating" by the Village Voice, was commissioned and produced by HERE's Artist Residency Program (HARP) in 2003, invited back in 2004 and published in the 2005 NYC Plays & Playwrights Anthology. It will tour to the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta in 2007. A revival of Mr. Augustine’s award-winning production, BIG TOP MACHINE, exploring magic and myth, was a PICK in the Village Voice, and enjoyed a five-week, entirely sold-out engagement at the Brick Theatre in 2005. Kevin’s fifth, full-length production, BRIDE, was recently accepted into Outside/Input 2006 - an artist residency program under the auspices of the Richard Foreman Ontological Hysteric Theatre. Kevin also developed BRIDE through a residency at the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire, 2005. BIG TOP MACHINE and 10 were respective winners of the San Francisco Fringe Festival’s Critic’s Choice Award and the New York International Fringe Festival’s Overall Excellence Award for Solo Show.

Kevin has created puppets for several New York dance and theatre productions including new work by HERE’s Executive Director, Kristin Marting. He teaches his acting-based puppetry at schools throughout the country, offering master classes in puppet sculpting, technique and play creation for kids, professional performers and passionate amateurs. His company, Lone Wolf Tribe is a member of the Alliance of Resident Theatres with studio space located in the A.R.T./NY South Oxford building in Fortgreen. Kevin is a Teaching Artist throughout the five boroughs, freelancing with various organizations including The Brooklyn Arts Council.
