Hobo Grunt Cycle
"Hobo Grunt Cycle is Pretty Damn Amazing!"
- President of the Jim Henson Foundation
"Augustine's most eloquent work for the stage yet"
"This prodution, a puppet-based meditation on clowns, army vets and dog fights, isn’t just beautiful; it raises vital metatheatrical questions"
"His puppetry with his sidekick mutt, called Hobo, is brilliant"
"Hobo Grunt Cycle is performed in silence, a nod to the tradition of pantomiming tramp-clowns such as Emmett "Weary Willie" Kelly, as well as a symbolic comment on the blanket secrecy that shrouds many veterans of conflict during and after their tours of duty."
By cleverly using clown artistry and puppetry, the play, Hobo Grunt Cycle captivates it's audience in a trance. Then, with great sensitivity and poignancy, it slowly unveils the tragic and universal truths of all war and conflict. One would only hope that every adolescent child witness this moving play in hopes of discouraging them from ever marching off to military service.
In Lone Wolf Tribe's breathtakingly poetic "Hobo-Grunt Cycle" they masterfully portray the legacy of veterans' trauma through the experience of a severely injured fight-ring pit bull, and a tramp clown, who attempts to heal the scars of violence by nursing his pet dog back to health. Triumphant!
"Pure magic" is the phrase that resonates for me after experiencing HOBO GRUNT CYCLE at the EXIT Theatre in San Francisco. It is thrilling to see compelling puppetry, exquisitely staged with fine acting united to illuminate provocative and important human concern. There is no jerk and jiggle puppetry here. All aspects of professional theatre and quality puppetry merged to expand conventional stage illusion into significant emotional revelation.
My connection to the dog? Magic! The floating clouds? Magic! The tramp clown? Magic! The important human story? Magic!
The Lone Wolf Tribe, directed by Kevin Augustine, brought video projection, wit, imaginative staging, large and small puppets and human pathos into intelligent harmony. HOBO GRUNT CYCLE is as satisfying as it is meaningful. It runs through March 5. Don't miss it. http://www.theexit.org/

"A keenly poetic attention to suffering, trauma and the historical onus of war has informed Augustine's new work, 'Hobo Grunt Cycle.'"
